Shoulder Impingement

Shoulder Impingement

Shoulder impingement occurs when there is a pinching or compression of tendons or bursa in the shoulder from bones of the shoulder. This is a common cause of shoulder pain and often results from overhead activities conducted in things like work and sport. Shoulder impingement can cause pain during everyday activities, and over time, can lead to inflammation (tendinitis) of the rotator cuff tendons. Eventually, this condition can even lead to a rotator cuff tear.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of shoulder impingement at Austin Sports Medicine includes a patient interview and physical exam of the shoulder.

Treatment

The majority of patients are able to recover from shoulder impingement through a treatment plan that includes anti-inflammatory medications, stretching exercises and the temporary avoidance of repetitive overhead activity.
